I got a couple of these for the cost of S/H with coupons from Raichlen's books, so I cannot complain about the price. But I opened the lid of the smoker to check the temperature, inserted the thermometer, turned to quickly answer a friend's question about the barn and when I turned back to the grill, the plastic on the thermometer had bubbled and melted all over poor Steven's face. I threw the other one out. Not a good buy.

I am on my second Polder BBQ Safe Serve thermometer. I specifically sought out this thermometer when my old one had served its time because of its simplicity, reliability, and battery usage. It takes regular AA batteries, not button or other hard to find batteries. I have always had good results with an accurate reading. It works good so Far a few things I'm not sure I like is the buttons are small and I have skinny fingers there little hard to turn off,and you have to remember to press the side button to release the probe it's kinda hidden.and if you don't turn it off it will keep beeping about your temp.

The main reason I bought this item was for the design. I liked the idea of having a long probe so I wouldn't have to get real close to the heat. Despite the cool design, the performance as a thermometer is seriously lacking. I cooked a steak and according to this thing it was medium-well, but the steak was barely rare and when I cooked chicken it said it was 170 and the chicken was still raw in the center. Note to self: listen to the reviews!

I like this thermometer because it is fast and easy to use. I read the other review and was curious because I have not seen the anti bacterial versions at a supermarket. After I bought mine on Amazon, I checked stores to make sure I got a good deal and only saw this item at Bed Bath and Beyond. The antibacterial tube was important to me. I have calibrated it after I dropped it once, and it was fine. I called the company to see about calibrating at boiling versus freezing, and because boiling can be rolling or vigorous, each is at a slightly different temp. They said putting it in the ice water is more accurate. It is better than my meat thermometer that I leave in the meat while cooking, I like the small ticks. My beef turned out just beautiful when I used it! It was prepared perfectly, so I think I did the calibration right.

This type of thermometer is not as durable as it should be. I used it to measure a custard sauce that I was cooking over a double boiler. The slight amount of steam that it received, during the tiny amount of time that the tip of the thermometer was immersed in the custard, destroyed the thermometer. It filled with water and "died".

This is unacceptable, the thermometer should be well able to handle this type of usage.

I bought one from a local grocery store. One of its claims is that it can be recalibrated -- true enough, but you can only calibrate it at one temperature. If you calibrate the temperature in ice water (32 deg. F), it's about 20 degrees off in boiling water (212 deg. F). You can't calibrate so that it will read accurately over the entire range that the unit claims to be able to measure, which means it's fairly useless.
