This thermometer takes some time to come up to temperature and it's hard to find the correct spot on the metal to get a good reading. This makes it less than ideal for steaks since by the time the temperature gets to medium rare your steak will be well done. That said though, the temperature reading is accurate and it will work great on any roast where you can get the thermometer deep into the meat. This makes the reading come up faster.

Works better than thermometers with glass. The glass always fogs up on those, this thermometer has no glass. However, the temperature on a charcoal grill changes faster than this thermometer can track. I seem to have better luck holding my hand over the grill and counting the Mississippi's. Inaccurate - John Alabaster -
I bought two of these for dutch oven cooking. One of them reads 200 degrees sitting on the table in 50 degree weather. The other one reads 150 degrees. The flat wire under the outside button is not well calibrated and reads consistently low when in place on the oven. Also the magnet is too weak to hold the unit on a vertical surface. This thermometer has one main purpose, to read temperature and it doesn't.

I bought a Taylor just like this but is was a square oval shape but same design. It worked fine the first time but quickly the face would darken and then get smoked...cleaning only removed the letter...light cleaning just so I could read. One time it got to hot and never came down on to the scale again. This was in an oven so it had to be less than 550 or so.

Numbers came off face of thermometer during 1st use - K. Cathey - Oklahoma
The theory of this thermometer was wonderful, and I thought it would be great to use in my Weber Smoky Mountain smoker to determine the temp right at the grill level. Two hours into the cook, running at about 225 degrees, I lifted the lid to baste and picked up the thermometer to wipe the smoky residue off the face to make it easier to see whilst looking through the top vent of the smoker. I was shocked to see that the numbers on the dial come right off onto the damp towel that I was using! Not on one, but on both thermometers. I have no idea if this is normal, and I know that Taylor usually has an excellent reputation, but if this low heat causes the ink to release, how does it work on really hot grills???

I may have gotten a few from a bad batch, and I have already contacted Taylor about this problem.

As usual, your mileage may vary, but this was my experience.

I have had this wonderful thermometer for a couple of months now and have used it dozens of times. First - it is right on the money. I compared it to my old reliable (made in Japan, so you know how old and reliable) analog instant read and they were a degree or less one to the other. The digital is wonderful - numbers are large, there is a light for night outdoor temperature reading, it goes off automatically after 5 minutes or can be turned off manually, which is the way I do it to save battery life. One notation to save you some time figuring it out, as the instructions don't address this: when it turns on it is without the backlight, which is fine for kitchen use. Just press again and the light comes on. To turn off, you must press and hold the on/off button for a few seconds. The best part - no reading glasses to grab on and off. A total pleasure.

Great Little Thermometer - Jarhead -
This is the best low priced thermometer that I have owned. I have a 0 ThermaPen and this works just as well. Just about 1-2 seconds slower. Best way to take the temp is put it in the meat before turning it on. Then it will read instantly when you hit the button. Same thing with the 0 one.
I highly recommend this and use it at least 4 times per week. Need to buy more, cause I would be lost without it.

I like this thermometer because it is fast and easy to use. I read the other review and was curious because I have not seen the anti bacterial versions at a supermarket. After I bought mine on Amazon, I checked stores to make sure I got a good deal and only saw this item at Bed Bath and Beyond. The antibacterial tube was important to me. I have calibrated it after I dropped it once, and it was fine. I called the company to see about calibrating at boiling versus freezing, and because boiling can be rolling or vigorous, each is at a slightly different temp. They said putting it in the ice water is more accurate. It is better than my meat thermometer that I leave in the meat while cooking, I like the small ticks. My beef turned out just beautiful when I used it! It was prepared perfectly, so I think I did the calibration right.

This type of thermometer is not as durable as it should be. I used it to measure a custard sauce that I was cooking over a double boiler. The slight amount of steam that it received, during the tiny amount of time that the tip of the thermometer was immersed in the custard, destroyed the thermometer. It filled with water and "died".

This is unacceptable, the thermometer should be well able to handle this type of usage.









Not accurate - Asad - New Jersey
I bought one from a local grocery store. One of its claims is that it can be recalibrated -- true enough, but you can only calibrate it at one temperature. If you calibrate the temperature in ice water (32 deg. F), it's about 20 degrees off in boiling water (212 deg. F). You can't calibrate so that it will read accurately over the entire range that the unit claims to be able to measure, which means it's fairly useless.

I HATED this thermometer from the get-go. Took a long time to get up to temp, and I was never sure of the accuracy. For small pieces of meat, it was impossible as there are two prongs obviously with this fork.

And then, to boot, the darn thing stopped working after just two weeks.

Too bad there's no option for ZERO stars.
